Frequently asked questions
What is the Wieliczka Salt Mine?
It's one of the world's oldest salt mines, near Kraków, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978. Over centuries miners carved chapels, statues and chandeliers from the rock salt underground. The visitor Tourist Route descends more than 130 metres underground and winds 3.5 km through salt-hewn chambers to St Kinga's Chapel, a full church carved entirely from salt.
Is the visit a guided tour, and is it in English?
Yes — the Tourist Route is always a guided tour, offered in several languages. The English-language departures are the ones most international visitors want, and they are the first to fill. We secure an English tour on your chosen date and send you joining notes.
Do I need to book in advance?
Strongly recommended. Departures are timed and capped, and English tours sell out days to a week or more ahead in high season. Booking in advance is the difference between a confirmed English tour and hoping for a space on the day.
How long does it take, and how far is it from Kraków?
The underground guided tour is about two hours; allow two to three hours in total. Wieliczka is roughly 15 km southeast of Kraków — about 25 minutes by train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia.
Is it physically demanding?
There is a long descent by stairs at the start and a good deal of walking underground, though a lift brings you back up at the end. It's manageable for most visitors with reasonable mobility; if anyone in your party has mobility needs, tell us and we'll confirm the current arrangements.
How do the family tickets work?
The operator offers family tickets for two adults with one child (2+1) or two adults with two children (2+2), each as a single booking. Choose the one that matches your party at checkout, and we'll confirm your group meets the operator's conditions before booking.
Is it worth it with children?
Very much so — the scale of the caverns, the underground salt lake, the carved chapels and the chandeliers tend to captivate children and adults alike. Bring a warm layer: it's cool underground year-round.
Are you the mine, or an official partner?
Neither — we're an independent booking-assistance service for international visitors. We are not the operator and not an official partner; we help you book and buy the official ticket in your own language, with our service fee included in the price. If you'd rather buy directly, the mine's official site is bilety.kopalnia.pl.
